| Ryuuzaki Umi | |||||||||
|
Character Name: Ryuuzaki Umi Variation: "Celestial" Source: Magic Knights Rayearth (Artbook print) Total Cost: 150 USD Time Consumed: 24 Hours or so Why I made it: I decided to make this one for some rather odd reasons. Nekocon was coming up and I had ordered some Wonderflex on impulse. I was trying to think of a new costume I could do for a photoshoot that we were going to do at the beach (we never got to sadly as it was just too cold). I wanted something ocean-like that would allow me to play around with the Wonderflex. Umi won. I always liked her out of the Magic Knights, and out of my group of three I always ended up being cast as her in high school. I always adored this artbook picture, and decided inevitably that this was the costume to go with. I am insane. How I made it: The making of the armor was by far the most complicated part of this costume. I used Wonderflex and Paperclay primarily, with Fimo for the jewels. The shoulder piece was the first part that I made, I honestly think I like it the best. It was made using a round mold I made and then adding bits and pieces on. Paperclay then Gesso were added to the entire piece for smoothness and Fimo Jewels then the entire thing was painted and glossed. The rings actually came from a pair of bondage pants that I own lol! The flowy part of the skirt is one thing I am very proud of. It consists of 5.5 yards of habotai silk which I dyed myself to give it the light blue colour. I love Habotai because it has a light weight to it and it floats beautifully in any wind. I wish that I had some shots from a beach or other windy place. Maybe when it gets warmer. The boots and other fabric parts are made from polyester and the skirt had a very slight gradient added to it by top secret means. The wig was sharpie dyed and tends to turn me a bit blue *sigh*. The sword is Wonderflex, a Dowel Rod, and Paperclay with paint and
gesso and a ribbon for finishing. The ball at the pommel is Fimo too.
Likes: I love the armor as well as the flowy silk part. I think that I did pretty darned well for my first set of armor! Dislikes: I don't like the skirt, nor do I like the fact of how short it is. I want to get into better shape before I wear this one again. I also don't like how it is automatically called Celestial now that a bunch of cosplayers decided to call it that one day. : P
